Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD) FAQs: Cost, Training, Value

What exactly is Kubernetes application development?

Kubernetes application development refers to the process of creating, deploying, and managing applications within a Kubernetes cluster. Kubernetes app development is focused on containerized applications that run efficiently on K8s, leveraging features like automatic scaling, load balancing, and self-healing. This course teaches you to understand YAML configuration files, Docker containers, and Kubernetes APIs so that you can effectively build and maintain applications that take advantage of Kubernetes orchestration and scaling.

Is the Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD) worth it?

Yes, for any IT professional who builds, deploys or configures cloud-native apps with Kubernetes, the CKAD is worth it for advancing your career and deepening your familiarity with container runtimes and microservice architecture. The Certified Kubernetes Application Developer credential is well-respected and it's understood that someone who can pass the test knows how to define application resources and use Kubernetes core primitives to create/migrate, configure, expose and observe scalable applications

How difficult is the CKAD exam?

The Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD) exam is challenging. The CKAD exam is a 2-hour long performance-based test with problems that are designed to test your practical familiarity with developing and deploying apps with Kubernetes. Cramming won't be very helpful when it comes to the CKAD exam, instead you'll want to take a course that emphasizes practical experience with application design, deployment, maintenance, environment configuration, and managing K8s services and networking.

How much does the Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD) cost?

It costs $395 to attempt the Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD). $395 gets you two attempts (within a year) at the two-hour long performance-based exam. If you pass the CKAD, the certification is valid for three years. The Linux Foundation offers a CKAD companion course for an additional $200. There are no prerequisites for the CKAD, so as long as you can pass it, the total cost is $395.

Who should earn the Certified Kubernetes Application Developer?

The CKAD is a very good tool for Kubernetes engineers, cloud engineers or cloud application developers, and it's good to have on your resume if you're applying to be one. For jobs that depend on using container runtimes, or navigating microservice architectures, the CKAD proves competence. Whether you're already working in cloud-native application development or you want to break into it, the CKAD is a good tool to advance your career.
