Advanced Cisco Network Design: Cisco QoS Tutorial FAQs: Cost, Training, Value

What is Quality of Service (QoS) and what does it accomplish?

Quality of Service (QoS) refers to a set of techniques that get used in computer networks to ensure a certain level of performance thanks to effective traffic management. QoS is better thought of as a set of standards than a measurement of network speed or traffic throughput. Examples of standards related to QoS include prioritizing certain types of data packet over others and monitoring bandwidth, latency and packet loss limits.

What models does Cisco support for providing QoS?

There are three QoS models most often provided for by Cisco equipment: Integrated Services (IntServ), Differentiated Services (DiffServ), and Best Effort. Cisco devices implement these models with techniques like classification, marking, queuing and traffic shaping – all in an effort to optimize network performance and meet specified parameters. Those three models shape traffic differently: from fine-grained control of network resources, to prioritizing traffic based on service levels, or treating traffic equally.

What are the three categories of QoS tools?

The exact number of QoS categories or tools there are depends on how you divvy them up, but the three categories of QoS tools (generally speaking) are traffic classification and marking, congestion management, and congestion avoidance. Traffic-related tools identify and label types of traffic to be prioritized. Congestion management techniques try to schedule traffic during known/anticipated periods of congestion. Congestion avoidance tools adjust traffic flow before congestion can happen.

Who should take this advanced Cisco network design course?

Designing and implementing Quality of Service (QoS) solutions for Cisco networks is a skill set normally reserved for network professionals with several years of experience already under their belt. Network engineers, network architects and experienced network administrators are usually the people responsible for optimizing network performance, prioritizing critical traffic and ensuring Quality of Service requirements get met. You'll need a solid understanding of Cisco networking fundamentals to excel in this course.

Why is it important to learn about Cisco quality of service (QoS)?

Knowing how to implement Quality of Service (QoS) for Cisco networks is an important skill for Cisco network engineers or anyone else responsible for ensuring smooth and efficient communication within networks. Knowing how to prevent slowdowns and bottlenecks with QoS techniques and tools is a valuable skill to be able to put on a resume. Video calls, online gaming and other real-time activities are improved when QoS is properly implemented.
