What is RADIUS (Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service)?

RADIUS (Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service) is an authentication protocol that was originally developed to allow users to remotely dial into an access server. A client/server protocol that runs in the application layer over either TCP or UDP, RADIUS authenticates users through a client network device, such as a router, switch or VPN connector. The server component of it typically runs as a background process on a Linux or Windows computer and maintains profiles of the users. In some implementations, the server can also act as a proxy client to other RADIUS servers.

RADIUS works by having the client forward user connection requests to the server. If the server authenticates and authorizes the user, it can then connect to the client. Through using RADIUS, you can secure the privacy of both your systems and your users. Furthermore, you can usually integrate it into your systems without making significant changes to them.
